Thank you 2018

Taking an improv class; performing improv; even going to see an improv show are all courageous acts. Improv shows can be not great; trying improv can be terrifying for many people; and performing improv in front of a live audience can be unimaginable. It takes courage to take those chances AND it takes a supportive community to EN-courage ideas and then “yes, and” them into great ideas.

As 2018 comes to a close, I wanted to thank you for your part of our encouraging community. It’s been an amazing year for the Improv Marin community. Can someone please ask, “how amazing?” Yes, thank you! I heard, “how amazing?”

Here are some highlights:

  1. We transitioned the Wednesday Drop-in to the Level Up Drop-in and started a Foundation Drop-in on Tuesdays.

  2. We tested multiple new performance formats: All-in Improv: Improv + Poker;  Improv Fight Night; Improv + West Side Story - singing; and Improv On Set: a live pilot show, recorded for TV at, and in partnership with the Community Media Center of Marin.

  3. We now have a leadership team (Pam, Russ, Joy, Kate, Joel, and Laila) collaborating to grow and enrich our community.

  4. We hosted a prototype youth improv class and continued a lunchtime improv club at White Hill Middle School in Fairfax. Teen class scheduled to start in 2019!

  5. We launched a prototype membership program.

  6. We had awesome guest instructors: Judith Asseo (Big City Improv, Secret Improv Society); Joel Micucci (Flash Family, Big City Improv, Secret Improv Society); and Alex Lerman (East Bay Improv, Berkeley Improv).

  7. And finally, just days before the end of the year, we launched this blog. We’ll be highlighting our latest news and happenings and sharing stories and perspectives from our community, partners, and more.

Thank you for being an encouraging member of our growing improv community. Courage is the fuel of improvisation—thanks for contributing yours. As great as this year has been, we’ve set our sights on an even better year ahead: more performances, more classes, and more creative cross-training events. We look forward to playing with you, seeing you, hearing from you, and definitely taking chances with you.
